Gregory Randall “Greg” Wright

Gregory Randall “Greg” Wright passed away peacefully at his home in Atascadero on December 22, 2017 with his family by his side.
Greg was born July 16, 1951 in Moses Lake, Washington, to Donna Knoph and Donald Wright; his father was killed in the Korean War while serving in the military before Greg was born. His family moved to the Bay Area shortly thereafter, and Greg was raised in Oakland, CA. Greg’s mother remarried and Greg was the second of four sons. The family moved to the Paso Robles area in the late 1960’s when they bought and operated a local motel.
Greg started his career at Atascadero State Hospital when he was 18 years old.  He started as a Psychiatric Technician and served in various supervisory positions.  He retired as a Nursing Coordinator after 32 years of state service. He was known by his staff to be a fair and supportive leader, approachable, and understanding. He was also considered kind and empathetic to the mentally ill patients.
Greg loved playing golf with his friends, gardening, camping, and traveling (especially to Mexico). He recently enjoyed Baja California, San Felipe area, and spent the past year there as often as possible. He was a big football fan and loved the San Francisco 49ers followed by the Oakland Raiders. When his Stepson, Gregory, was younger the family had a ski boat and enjoyed water skiing, wakeboarding, and camping at the local lakes. He was the official Boat Captain for the enjoyment of the rest of the family.  He was a good cook and was skilled at barbecuing.  For years he was on the barbecue team for the annual Atascadero State Hospital Staff Appreciation BBQ.
Greg had a quick wit and a good sense of humor. He was known for his dry witted “one liners.” He was a quiet, private man, who preferred small gatherings with family and long time friends. He enjoyed spending time with his nephews and watching them swim in the pool at his home. He also enjoyed spending time with his brother, Sean, doing various activities like golf trips and attending NFL football games. In his younger years, he enjoyed backpacking and cross-country skiing trips with his friends Bill and Bob.
Greg is survived by his wife Lori Martin, stepson Gregory Martin, brother Steve Wright, brother Sean Knoph, sister-in-law Muriel Yanez, and nephews Cooper and Stabler Knoph. He is preceded in death by his Mother, Donna Knoph and his Brother, Jeff Knoph.
Friends and family are invited to a celebration of life on Friday, January 12, 2018 at 3:00 p.m. at the Kiwanis Hall located in Atascadero Lake Park, Pismo Blvd.
