San Miguel woman identified as homicide victim; suspect arrested

SAN MIGUEL — A 60-year-old San Miguel woman was killed in a shooting Sept. 28 following a domestic disturbance, and a 66-year-old San Miguel man was taken into custody the following morning in Wasco, according to the San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies responded to a report of shots fired in the 500 block of River Road on Sept. 28. They found Reyna Espinosa inside a residence suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Deputies and medical personnel performed lifesaving measures, but Espinosa did not survive. The Sheriff's Office reported her next of kin has been notified.

Detectives determined the shooting occurred following a domestic disturbance and verbal argument between Espinosa and Jose Sevilla Ruiz, 66, of San Miguel, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

Ruiz had fled the scene before deputies arrived and was believed to be driving a gold Ford F-150 pickup. Investigators followed leads and received information that Ruiz was traveling eastbound out of San Luis Obispo County.

At about 8:45 a.m. on Sept. 29, Ruiz was located and taken into custody without incident in Wasco by members of the Sheriff’s Office Special Operations Unit, with assistance from the Wasco Police Department and California Highway Patrol.

The Sheriff’s Office said investigators believe the incident was isolated and that there is no threat to the general public. No additional suspects are outstanding.
