PRJUSD considers new tennis facility at Paso Robles High School

Proposed project would add six courts, spectator amenities and 82-space parking lot, pending bond approval

PASO ROBLES — Paso Robles Joint Unified School District (PRJUSD) trustees received an overview Sept. 22 of a proposed new tennis facility at Paso Robles High School, a project that would relocate and enhance the campus’ existing courts while adding parking and spectator amenities.

The proposal from 19-6 Architects is part of the district’s 2030 Vision Facilities Master Plan. The project remains subject to Measure G bond approval.

The presentation was informational, and the item is scheduled to return to the Board of Trustees Oct. 13 as a regular action item.

Under Phase 1 of the facilities master plan at PRHS, the district proposes relocating the tennis courts to a new facility designed to improve the experience for athletes and spectators.

The proposed facility would feature six new tennis courts with bleachers, shaded spectator seating, dedicated team areas and sport lighting. Plans also include improved ADA pathways, a drinking fountain and bottle filler, power and fiber infrastructure for a future concession pad, and an 82-space parking lot.

The plan is intended to address several limitations of the existing tennis courts, which date to approximately 1980 and are original to the campus.

According to the presentation, the current courts lack shade and spectator seating and need to be resurfaced. Relocation is identified as part of the first phase of improvements at PRHS, pending bond approval.

The proposed new facility would incorporate updated amenities rather than simply resurfacing the existing courts.

The district is seeking approval of a $429,800 design fee proposal from 19-6 Architects, to be funded through Capital Facilities Fund 40.

The presentation estimates construction costs at $5.42 million, with a total project cost estimate of $6.46 million.

The total estimate includes more than construction alone, though the presentation did not provide a detailed breakdown of the additional costs.

If the project receives the necessary approvals, the district’s preliminary schedule would begin design work in October.

The proposed timeline calls for authorization to proceed in October, with design work and construction documents completed by December. Plans would be submitted to the Division of the State Architect in January 2027, with approval estimated for April. Following bidding and board approval of a contractor in June, construction would begin July 12, 2027, with completion scheduled for Jan. 14, 2028.

The schedule is contingent on the project moving forward through the required approval and design processes.

The Sept. 22 presentation did not constitute approval of the project. The item is expected to return to the Board

of Trustees Oct. 13 for action.

At that meeting, trustees will consider the proposal for the architectural design services.

The project’s advancement also remains tied to Measure G bond approval, as noted in the presentation.

If approved and carried through the proposed schedule, the new tennis facility could be completed in January 2028, providing PRHS with six updated courts, spectator amenities and additional parking.

The next Paso Robles Joint Unified School District meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, Oct. 13 at 6 p.m.
