Over 1,000 food items were donated to Loaves & Fishes by the Paso Robles Adult Softball Organization (P.A.S.O.) on November 25th.
The donation was the result of the 36thannual “Turkey Shoot” softball tournament held at Barney Schwartz Park on November 23rd & 24th.
According to P.A.S.O. President Walt Van Zandt, “This is our favorite softball tournament of the year! We had twenty-five teams taking part over the weekend with each team member bringing at least five dollars in non-perishable food items. Thanks to everyone’s generosity, we delivered more food to Loaves and Fishes then we ever have!”
Established in 1983, Loaves & Fishes is a non-profit, cooperative Christian ministry providing emergency food and other services for transients, homeless and residents in crisis. It maintains a food warehouse and distribution center at 2650 Spring Street in Paso Robles and relies on food donations from the general public, sponsors and events such as the Turkey Shoot.
This year’s Turkey Shoot in Paso Robles celebrated its 36th anniversary, making it among the longest running men’s and women’s softball tournaments in the area and one of the most popular with teams from across the Central Coast and Central Valley taking part.
The Paso Robles Adult Softball Organization is a non-profit group which, eight years ago, assumed responsibility of the softball program from the City’s recreation department.
In addition to scheduling and bracketing the nearly two hundred teams that play during the year, P.A.S.O. hires and certifies umpires, establishes rules, supplies necessary equipment and holds several large softball tournaments which benefit the community of Paso Robles during the year.
