The Europeans are heading this way to attend the list of events set for the Central Coast this month. It’s hard for them to experience ranching in our area, but timing and scheduling are at odds with their desire to participate and photograph. The Australians will join them at a variety of events. Our Mid-State Fair, Salinas and Early Skills of the Rancho in Santa Maria
Loosen up your shoulder on your roping arm. There are roping clinics this month for each style application.
Summer Clinic
Whether it’s team roping with short ropes for speed or long ropes where tradition requires patience and finesse, you can leave the clinic with the basics that can start you on a long adventure. Be careful: many catch “rope fever.” It is costly, but a good deal of fun for many.
Laugh with new friends June 30-July 2 at a roping clinic with Dwight Hill here in Paso. $650 includes roping instruction, full access to Dwight for questions, BBQ lunch and Sat. night supper. Make friends with others who are improving their skills. Let educated eyes evaluate your style. Dwight is recognized on ranches, at rodeos in the north and working on the big ranches as one of the top competitors in the West. He will also assist you with your horses and their training/correction to improve your overall performance.
Depending upon the weather, there will be a morning session, BBQ lunch, an afternoon session and then, if the program is akin to last year’s, roping way into the night (one session participants were so intrigued and having fun till midnight).
The Diffenbaugh family makes you feel at home right away. It doesn’t matter if you are new to roping or an old hand, you’ll find patience and acceptance.
If you are looking for a horse, Dwight will often carry one or two extra for sale right off of the ranch or bring one in Oct. when he returns for the Pro/Am in Santa Ynez. You can check them out at the clinic and then compete at the Early Skills of the Rancho event in at Santa Maria. He and his amateur teams have more than the average. Practice can make perfect (or at least help you as you venture into new territory). Have fun.

Madonna Inn Arena in SLO will host Priefort’s Regional Qualifier for Pacific Slope Team Ropers as they contest toward the US Championships July 14-16. The arena is visible just off of Highway 101 at 100 Madonna Road. Priefert makes ranch equipment such as livestock panels. They sponsor regional competitions to identify levels of ability. To enter, ropers must be paid members of WSTR or USTRA.

If you missed the initial horse-human clinic, July 22 will provide you another opportunity.
Equus Coaching: Human & Equine: a Path to Understanding lead by Kasia. Hurry to reserve your July 22 spot. The next workshop is slated for Reno on July 29th. If you need some support to lift your spirits or sort out issues, allow the horses and trained aids to walk you through.
Water, coffee, tea and light snacks will be available. Wear layers with closed toed shoes/boots, water and sun protection. Be open to trying something new. Take along a notebook. Chairs will be provided as will a box lunch to enjoy on a lovely ranch outside of Paso.

Another successful season has completed part one the the Horse Park. Hunters and jumpers vied for checks, titles and bragging rights. There will be a break until fall with the hope of cooler days for this class act in our equine community.

The headliner for the Salinas Cowboy Music and Poetry Gathering July 16 this year is friend, Dave Stamey. If no one else showed up, he’s worth far more than the price of the ticket. Cowboys and Indians Magazine has called him “the Charley Russell of Western Music.” while Western Horseman Magazine declared his “Vaquero Song” to be one of the greatest Western songs of all time.
Dave Stamey has been a cowboy, a mule packer, a dude wrangler, and is now one of the most popular Western entertainers working today. Stamey was inducted into the Western Music Hall of Fame in 2016. He has been voted seven times Entertainer of the Year, six times Male Performer of the Year and five times Songwriter of the Year by the Western Music Association. Am proud to say that he received the Will Rogers Award from the Academy of Western Artists delighting audiences in 23 states. Dave finds that he prefers this to being stomped by angry horses.
Annie Lyndon, no small talent herself, often accompanies Dave on recordings. She will be entertaining along with Cowboy Poet, Humorist and Storyteller, Chris Isaacs. A three-time winner of the Academy of Western Artists Will Rogers Award, Chris Isaacs is a poet and storyteller. His poems and stories are alive with the heart and humor of life from a cowboy’s point of view. He can usually find the humor of any situation. Chris is considered by many to be one of the finest humorists in the country.
