Friends,

Yesterday, a bipartisan coalition of San Luis Obispo elected leaders, including each SLO County Mayor, and I sent a letter to the Governor. In the letter, we asked the Governor to allow the county to start moving towards a science-based, phased reopening of our local economy.

Getting people back to work with a science-based, phased reopening of the local economy is not a partisan issue. Recessions have severe public health impacts of their own, including an increase in the mortality rate, domestic violence and child abuse.

Here in SLO County, we have less than 150 cases of COVID-19, and more than 110 of those who have tested positive have fully recovered. The county was one of the first to issue a Safer-At-Home order, and has gone above and beyond to prepare for a surge – including building an Alternative Care Site with capacity for over 900 beds.

However, our county cannot act alone to establish a science-based, phased reopening of the economy. We need the Governor to relax his statewide order to allow for more local control.

Sincerely,

Jordan
