It’s free! Just show up!
Music of the 20th—21st Century, 1900 to Today: Major composers such as Debussy, Holst, Schoenberg, de Falla, Stravinsky, Villa-Lobos, Prokofiev, Honegger, Milhaud, Gershwin, Poulenc, Copland, Walton, Shostakovich, Britten, and Bernstein will be covered in this section.
Music of American Composers from 1750 to Today: This section will expand on such well-known composers as Gershwin, Copland, and Bernstein plus present lesser-known Romantic Period Americans such as Louis Moreau Gottschalk, George Chadwick, Amy Beach, and Edward MacDowell. Contemporary composers will include Samuel Barber, John Cage, John Adams, Philip Glass and others.
We will listen to and discuss some of the great works — symphonies, concertos, sonatas, chamber works, and both sacred and secular vocal pieces. Information about the composers, as well as some historical perspective, will be given. However, the emphasis will be on the listening experience and the rewards it can bring in today’s hectic world.
