Looking waaaaaay back: The Monkees and Liquid Paper
“In 1966, two Hollywood producers chose four unknown boys – Davy Jones, Peter Tork, Michael Nesmith and Micky Dolenz (on a free stage at this year’s California Mid-State Fair, Tuesday, July 25) – to star as the Monkees, a caricature of the Beatles, in their own television series to promote their albums.
When the Monkees broke up, Michael Nesmith recorded a few solo albums, but most rock critics continued making a Monkee of him. Eventually, through lavish spending and poor tax planning, Nesmith lost most of the million dollars he made with the Monkees.
Then his mother died and made him a millionaire all over again. In 1951, after toiling for years as a secretary, Bette Naismith Graham came up with something she first called Mistake Out, then Liquid Paper. In 1979, two years before she died, she sold her company to Gillette former than $47 million. Nesmith inherited approximately $25 million, and he earns a royalty on every bottle of liquid paper sold.”
