Two vegetation fires burn less than half-acre in Salinas River corridor

PASO ROBLES — Paso Robles Fire and Emergency Services responded to two vegetation fires in the Salinas River corridor Tuesday night, Sept. 1, with grazed firebreaks helping firefighters contain both incidents before they spread.

The first fire was reported at approximately 10 p.m. near Highway 101, south of the Paso Robles Street exit. A second fire was reported around 11:45 p.m. near an encampment south of the Highway 46 East exit.

The first fire was contained at the perimeter of a grazed area and extinguished before spreading farther into the river corridor. During the second fire, the treated area provided firefighters with access to quickly reach and extinguish the flames before they could spread beyond the river corridor and threaten the surrounding community.

The two fires burned a combined area of less than one-half acre. No injuries were reported.

Paso Robles Fire and Emergency Services responded with two fire engines, a ladder truck, a paramedic squad and an acting battalion chief. CAL FIRE/San Luis Obispo County Fire responded with two fire engines, a battalion chief, dozer, hand crew and water tender. Atascadero Fire responded with one fire engine.

The first incident required 14 firefighters, while the larger second fire required 45 firefighters.

Fire officials reminded residents that despite cooler weather, vegetation remains extremely dry and can burn rapidly. The public is encouraged to remain vigilant and use caution with any activity that could ignite dry vegetation.
