SAN LUIS OBISPO COUNTY — The San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Office is alerting residents to an ongoing asphalt paving scam targeting homeowners in the area, including recent incidents in Huasna Township and Nipomo.
Scammers pose as contractors offering “leftover” asphalt at discounted prices, perform substandard work, and demand far higher payments than agreed upon—sometimes two to ten times the original cost. Residents are advised to avoid unsolicited door-to-door offers, verify contractors through the California Contractors State License Board, obtain multiple estimates, and insist on written contracts with licensed businesses.
