SAN LUIS OBISPO COUNTY — A 46-year-old Oceano man who worked for the San Luis Obispo County Health Department and served as a local Cub Scout leader was arrested Thursday on suspicion of possessing child sexual abuse material.
According to the San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Office, detectives began investigating on Feb. 17 after receiving a report of suspected child sexual abuse material. During the investigation, authorities identified the suspect as Michael Schmidt, 46, of Oceano, who was employed in the county Health Department’s Information Technology division.
On the morning of March 5, sheriff’s detectives, assisted by the Fresno County Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force (ICAC), served a search warrant at Schmidt’s Oceano residence. Schmidt was taken into custody without incident on suspicion of possession of child sexual abuse material.
Investigators also discovered Schmidt served as a local Cub Scout leader in the Five Cities area.
