Fort Hunter Liggett continues fire response as road closures remain in place
By Staff Report · Mon Aug 31 2026
FORT HUNTER LIGGETT — Fort Hunter Liggett continues supporting interagency firefighting operations as crews respond to nearby wildfires, providing personnel, heavy equipment and space for a U.S. Forest Service fire base camp.
Officials said there is currently no direct danger to the cantonment area or people living and working on the installation.
Several road closures remain in effect. Nacimiento-Ferguson Road is closed between Highway 1 and Fort Hunter Liggett, while Del Venturi Road is closed to the public until further notice. Residents may continue to access Del Venturi Road.
Highway 1 is also closed along approximately 45 miles of the Big Sur coast due to the Timber and Plaskett fires.
Fort Hunter Liggett officials are urging the public to avoid closed areas unless travel is necessary and warned that emergency response corridors must remain clear. Security personnel have intercepted individuals attempting to bypass barriers on Nacimiento-Ferguson Road. Officials said unauthorized access creates safety risks and can interfere with firefighting and emergency response efforts.
Four air quality monitors have been deployed within the cantonment area to provide real-time Air Quality Index information through PurpleAir. Residents and people with respiratory conditions are advised to limit outdoor activity and keep windows closed while smoky conditions persist.
Officials are directing residents to Fort Hunter Liggett, Cal Fire and Monterey County emergency alert channels for the latest information.
