Creston Road intersection work to bring traffic changes in September

PASO ROBLES — Drivers traveling along Creston Road should expect temporary traffic changes at Golden Hill Road and Scott Street as intersection improvements get underway this month.

At Creston Road and Golden Hill Road, work is scheduled to begin Tuesday, Sept. 8, to demolish and rebuild the existing left-turn lane as part of the Creston Road Corridor Improvements Phase 2 project. Construction is scheduled from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. through Friday, Sept. 11.

During the work, the intersection will operate as a four-way stop around the clock, with traffic signals flashing red in all directions. Temporary lane reductions and shifts may also be required.

The turn-lane work is part of the $17.8 million Creston Road Phase 2 project, which began July 13. The project includes roadway rehabilitation and paving, underground utility improvements, sidewalks and Americans with Disabilities Act upgrades, bicycle facilities and a new roundabout at Rolling Hills Road.

At Creston Road and Scott Street, work is expected to begin Sept. 23 to modify the existing left-turn signal to operate as a flashing yellow arrow. The work is associated with the nearby Vinedo development and is expected to be completed by early October.

The flashing yellow arrow will allow left-turning vehicles to proceed after yielding to oncoming traffic when it is safe to do so. The signal would be the first of its kind in Paso Robles.

The Federal Highway Administration authorized flashing yellow arrow signals in 2009. According to the National Cooperative Highway Research Program, the signals result in fewer accidents than traditional yield-on-green configurations for left turns.

The Creston Road Phase 2 project is funded through a combination of locally approved sales tax Measures J-20 and I-24, State Priority Legislative Budget funding, a State Local Partnership Program grant and Highway Safety Improvement Program funding.

Drivers are encouraged to use caution, follow posted traffic controls, watch for construction crews and allow additional travel time when necessary.
