Central Coast Tennis Classic returns with increased prize money and top women’s field

TEMPLETON — The Central Coast Tennis Classic returns to Templeton Tennis Ranch Sept. 27-Oct. 4 with its strongest player lineup to date and an increased prize purse of $100,000.

The eighth annual ITF World Tour and USTA Pro Circuit event, presented by Central Coast Home Health and Hospice, features women’s players ranked from approximately No. 85 to No. 275 in the world, according to Tournament Director and Templeton Tennis Ranch General Manager Chris Fouquet.

German player Tatjana Maria is expected to be the tournament’s top seed. The 39-year-old, currently ranked No. 83 in the WTA rankings, recently advanced at the U.S. Open after defeating No. 30 seed Jelena Ostapenko in the first round.

Santa Barbara’s Kayla Day returns as the defending champion. Day, currently ranked No. 117 in the world, won her seventh career ITF singles title at last year’s Central Coast Tennis Classic after defeating Canada’s Kayla Cross in the final. Cross also returns this year and is expected to be one of the tournament’s eight seeded players.

American Mary Stoiana, ranked just behind Day on the entry list, is also among the world’s top 125 women’s players.

Madison Brengle, the 2022 Central Coast Tennis Classic singles champion, is returning to Templeton. The 36-year-old from Dover, Delaware, has won two singles and one doubles title on the WTA Tour, along with 19 singles and seven doubles titles on the ITF World Tour. Brengle defeated then-18-year-old Robin Montgomery in three sets to win the 2022 Templeton final.

Montgomery and another Central Coast Tennis Classic alumna, Ashlyn Krueger, recently reached the U.S. Open women’s doubles final as an unseeded team. They fell to former Central Coast Tennis Classic singles champion Taylor Townsend and Katerina Siniakova, who completed a career Grand Slam in doubles by winning all four major championships.

The qualifying field includes Americans Whitney Osuigwe, Vivian Wolff, Caroline Dolehide and 17-year-old Julietta Pareja of Carlsbad. Pareja returns after being ranked No. 1 in the world junior rankings last year.
