Cal Poly Girls Build partners with Habitat SLO County to build playhouses

SAN LUIS OBISPO COUNTY — Local high school girls gained hands-on construction experience while creating a lasting gift for children across San Luis Obispo County through this summer's Cal Poly Girls Build Summer Academy.

The week-long program once again partnered with Habitat for Humanity San Luis Obispo County (Habitat SLO), giving participants the opportunity to build and decorate custom playhouses for local families.

Guided by Cal Poly faculty and industry professionals, students worked together to learn carpentry, construction safety and teamwork while developing practical skills. The project also gave participants an opportunity to see how their work could directly benefit families in their community.

This year's academy resulted in four custom playhouses, each uniquely designed and painted before being delivered to local families through Habitat SLO's Playhouse Program.

The program provides children with a safe space to imagine, create and play while supporting Habitat SLO's broader mission of building homes, communities and hope.

"I love being in an industry where you can learn practical skills, work with others who have a common purpose, and give back," said Stacy Kolegraff, founder and leader of the Cal Poly Girls Build Summer Academy. "We hope these girls will return next year, and we invite supporters and partners to stay involved and help shape future programs."

The partnership marks the third year Cal Poly Girls Build and Habitat SLO have worked together on the project.

"I continue to be blown away by the skills and heart of these girls," said Colleen Stefanek, Habitat SLO's program manager. "Stacy Kolegraff has really created something unique and inspirational for our local girls to be able to learn the trades in a safe and welcoming way. Habitat SLO is proud to continue this partnership."

Students also worked alongside volunteers and community partners throughout the project, reinforcing lessons in teamwork, leadership and service. After the playhouses were completed, Habitat SLO coordinated their delivery and installation, creating memorable moments for recipient families as children received their new playhouses.

The Cal Poly Girls Build Summer Academy introduces young women to potential careers in construction, architecture, engineering and the skilled trades. Participants build confidence through hands-on experience with tools, problem-solving and mentorship while contributing to projects that benefit the local community.
