Caltrans crews discovered deceased male Friday morning; investigation caused significant traffic delays in both directions

TEMPLETON — Authorities are investigating after a deceased male was discovered off Highway 101 near Vineyard Drive in Templeton on Friday morning, July 31.

According to the California Highway Patrol, Caltrans crews discovered the body at approximately 11 a.m. near the southbound side of Highway 101, just south of the Vineyard Drive interchange.

The discovery prompted a significant law enforcement response and an investigation that continued into Friday afternoon. Emergency and law enforcement vehicles were reported along the highway as authorities worked at the scene.

At least one southbound lane was reportedly closed for several hours during the investigation, contributing to major traffic congestion through the Templeton area. Traffic was heavily impacted in both directions near the Vineyard Drive and Trader Joe's area as motorists slowed near the police activity.

The lane closure reportedly began around 11:30 a.m., with the affected lane reopening shortly after 2 p.m. Traffic delays continued in the area into the afternoon.

Authorities had not released the identity of the deceased male as of Friday afternoon. The circumstances surrounding the death, including the cause and manner of death, also remained under investigation.

Officials have not announced whether foul play was suspected.

Drivers traveling between Atascadero and Templeton encountered substantial delays during the investigation. Motorists were urged to continue moving through the area and avoid slowing or stopping to observe the law enforcement activity.

Additional traffic complications were reported in the Highway 101 corridor Friday, including a separate two-vehicle collision that contributed to congestion before being cleared.

The investigation remains ongoing. Additional information is expected to be released as authorities identify the deceased and determine the circumstances surrounding his death.
