Gary Nelson, a lifelong resident of Paso Robles, was born February 6, 1940. Growing up, Gary embraced the agricultural traditions of his family and community, ranching, raising cattle, cultivating almonds, and driving tractors for neighboring farms and ranches throughout the west side of Paso Robles.
This early connection to the land and its people helped shape the values, work ethic, and deep roots that would define Gary throughout his life.
After graduating from Paso Robles High School in 1959, Gary branched out, serving 6 years in the National Guard as a cook. He often recalled the camaraderie he shared in the kitchen with lifelong friend Robert Strahan, preparing meals featuring local beef and Pesenti jug wine.
The 1960’s were a busy and memorable decade for Gary. It was during this time he was introduced to the love of his life, Murreita “Rita” Cale, and within 6 months, the two were married. Together, Gary and Rita built a life centered on family and hard work raising three daughters.
Gary’s career path took a new direction when his mentor, Otto Van Horn, introduced him to the real estate and tax business. Following studies at Cal Poly, where he earned degrees in agriculture and business, graduating in the class of 1965, Gary partnered with Burr Webber to establish Webber-Nelson Realtors. The firm became a respected and enduring business, helping bridge the agricultural community with professional real estate, business, and tax planning services.
Gary’s faith was a guiding force throughout his life. He faithfully served as an elder and treasurer at the Atascadero Gospel Chapel. He volunteered with Billy Graham Crusades, Child Evangelism Fellowship, and enjoyed participating in the Christian Business Men’s Club, where he formed numerous lasting friendships.
Gary cherished the abundance and beauty of the central coast enjoying hunting, boating, surf fishing, clamming in Pismo Beach, and tending watermelon patches. Whether working the land, enjoying the outdoors, or spending time with family, Gary found happiness in the simple blessings of life and the community he loved so dearly.
Gary will be deeply missed by his loving daughters, grandchildren, extended family, and many friends. He took great joy in being actively involved in the lives of his grandchildren, celebrating their accomplishments and creating lasting memories with them.
His daughters and grandchildren will fondly remember Gary when enjoying his favorite breakfast, spaghetti, see a pancake flipped without a spatula, or witness a deer enjoying a snack set out in the front yard.
Gary was preceded in death by his wife Rita and parents, Helen and Francis Nelson.
Gary is survived by his daughters, Tina Nelson (George Wake), Jennifer Christensen (Ty Christensen), Jill Mazur (Mike Mazur). Grandchildren Morgan Leatherwood, Raye Ann Hutslar (Brandon Hutslar), Noelle Mazur, Michael Mazur and brother, Robin Nelson (Noreen Nelson)
At Gary’s request, no funeral services will be held. The family is planning a private celebration of life to honor and remember him.
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to all who have shared in Gary’s life and friendship over the years. His legacy of faith, hard work, generosity, and love for family will live on in the many lives he touched.
