PASO ROBLES — Students and staff at Virginia Peterson Elementary School spent the final week of the school year restoring a beloved campus mural in honor of America’s upcoming 250th anniversary celebration.
Led by teacher Megan Wortman, members of the school’s Room 14 Learning Center carefully repainted the large-scale United States mural located in a campus recreation area. The refreshed artwork now features vibrant red, white, and blue colors, creating a patriotic centerpiece ahead of the nation’s semiquincentennial celebration in July.
The mural, a longtime fixture on campus, had faded after years of exposure to the elements. Students worked alongside staff to prepare and repaint the landmark, gaining hands-on experience in teamwork, planning, and community service throughout the project.
"This project gave students the opportunity to take ownership of their campus while contributing to something that will be enjoyed by Virginia Peterson students for years to come," said Principal Monica Pafumi. "It was exciting to watch the mural come back to life."
The restoration was made possible through a donation of paint from Lowe’s. The finished mural now serves as both a colorful gathering place and a symbol of school pride, civic engagement, and community collaboration.
