Vine Street glows with Victorian cheer for 39th Annual Christmas Showcase

Tradition draws thousands to historic neighborhood for an evening of lights, carols, and old-fashioned holiday magic

PASO ROBLES — The glow of thousands of Christmas lights, the sound of carols drifting through the night air and the unmistakable presence of a grumpy Ebenezer Scrooge once again transformed Vine Street into a scene from a bygone era as the Vine Street Victorian Christmas Showcase returned this year for its 39th annual celebration.

Held Saturday, Dec. 13, between 8th and 20th streets, the free community event drew thousands of residents and visitors to experience an old-fashioned Victorian Christmas. The annual showcase, widely regarded as one of Paso Robles’ most beloved holiday traditions, is estimated to attract as many as 8,000 attendees throughout the evening.

"Such a fun community event and one that always gets me in the Christmas spirit," said Jaime Silveira, owner and broker at Malik Real Estate Group. "There’s something so lovely about seeing all the hard work people put into lighting up their homes with Christmas lights — pure holiday magic. And of course, we couldn’t miss a visit with Ebenezer Scrooge … what a grump!

The Vine Street Victorian Christmas Showcase traces its roots back to a simple conversation in early autumn of 1986. That year, Vine Street resident and Paso Robles Main Street Association Executive Director Norma Moye knocked on her neighbor Grace Pucci's door with an idea to host a small Victorian-themed Christmas gathering on the historic street.

"I said 'sure,' and we sat down in my front parlor and discussed her idea," Pucci said. "That humble conversation was the beginning of the event we call the Vine Street Victorian Christmas Showcase."

With the help of neighbors and volunteers, the inaugural event came together with carolers, hot cider, popcorn, Santa and his elves, roasted chestnuts, hayrides and even Mr. Scrooge roaming the street.

Approximately 600 people attended that first showcase. Moye later recalled being approached by a visitor from England who was moved to tears, saying the event reminded her of home.

Over the following years, the showcase steadily expanded. One early addition that became a signature feature was the placement of hand-crafted snowman signs in front of participating homes, announcing the activity taking place at each location. More than 60 of those snowmen now line Vine Street on showcase night, guiding visitors through the festivities.

While performers and attractions have evolved, the heart of the event remains unchanged. Visitors this year enjoyed appearances by Santa Claus, carolers singing traditional Christmas songs, a living nativity scene, sledding snow, cookies at Grandma’s Cookie House, hot cider, the Snow King and Queen, and the ever-popular Ebenezer Scrooge.

Community participation remains central to the showcase’s success. During the day of the event, neighbors and volunteers can be seen setting up tents, adding last-minute decorations and checking on logistics to ensure the evening runs smoothly.

Local businesses and organizations also take part. Local dentist Dr. Grant Marcum, whose office sits on Vine Street, shared that his team welcomed Dr. Alina True and her family to their annual Christmas party during the showcase. Dr. True, who has worked part-time with the practice for the past six months, will be joining full-time in January 2026. The office has been hosting a Vine Street party with its team for over 20 years.

Behind the scenes, careful coordination ensures that activities complement one another. Organizers work to avoid overlapping sound or conflicting attractions, balancing lively music, quiet performances and character interactions to create a cohesive experience.

Now nearing four decades, the Vine Street Victorian Christmas Showcase continues to stand as a gift from the neighborhood to the community.
