Templeton announces zero-tolerance enforcement for illegal fireworks

TEMPLETON — The Templeton Community Services District and Templeton Fire & Emergency Services are reminding residents that new fireworks regulations will be in effect this Independence Day, including a zero-tolerance policy for illegal fireworks and increased enforcement measures.

Officials emphasized that only California State Fire Marshal-approved “Safe and Sane” fireworks may be sold, possessed, and used within district boundaries. Residents must be at least 18 years old to purchase, sell, or handle fireworks, and valid identification is required for all purchases.

Under new regulations, Safe and Sane fireworks may only be discharged on privately owned, noncommercial property with the permission of the property owner. Fireworks are prohibited on streets, sidewalks, parking lots, parks, school grounds, commercial properties, public rights-of-way, and other publicly owned property. In addition, discharge will only be permitted on July 4 between noon and 10 p.m.

The district warned that violations involving illegal fireworks can result in fines of up to $1,000 per offense, while violations involving Safe and Sane fireworks can carry fines of $100 per offense. Offenses may also be prosecuted as misdemeanors, with penalties that can include up to one year in county jail.

Officials also announced that aerial surveillance will be used during the holiday, and property owners may be cited under Templeton’s new fireworks social host ordinance if illegal fireworks activity occurs on their property.
