SLO County Sheriff’s Office warns of illegal fireworks ahead of Fourth of July
By Staff Report · Tue Jun 30 2026
SAN LUIS OBISPO COUNTY — The San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Office is reminding residents that all fireworks — except permitted professional displays — are illegal in unincorporated areas of the county ahead of the Fourth of July holiday.
The ban includes communities such as Oceano, Cayucos, Nipomo, Avila Beach, Shandon, Creston, Santa Margarita and San Miguel, along with all other unincorporated areas.
Officials say illegal fireworks pose ongoing risks each year, including fires, injuries, property damage and strain on emergency response resources. The use of fireworks can also negatively impact pets, livestock and individuals sensitive to loud noise, including veterans.
To ensure compliance, the Sheriff’s Office said it will deploy maximum staffing and take a zero-tolerance enforcement approach, actively responding to reports and issuing citations for violations.
Penalties can include fines of up to $1,000 per violation, with each discharge treated as a separate offense. Property owners may also be held responsible for fireworks used on their property, even if they did not ignite them. Additional costs for emergency response and potential criminal charges may also apply in cases involving dangerous fireworks.
Residents are encouraged to report illegal fireworks use by calling the Fireworks Reporting Hotline at (805) 781-1933. Officials emphasized that 911 should not be used for fireworks complaints.
San Luis Obispo County Crime Stoppers is also offering a reward of up to $500 for information leading to the identification and arrest of individuals involved in the possession or sale of illegal fireworks. Tips can be submitted by calling (805) 549-7867, using the P3 Tips mobile app, or submitting information online through Crime Stoppers.
