PRJUSD administration responds to student walkout rumors at Lewis Flamson

PASO ROBLES — The administration at Lewis Flamson Junior High addressed families after becoming aware of rumors surrounding a possible student-led political walkout on campus.

In a message to parents, Superintendent Jennifer Loftus said the district is required to remain politically neutral but respects students’ rights to express their views.

"As a school district, we are required to remain neutral with regard to events of a political nature," Loftus said. "We respect students’ rights to express their views and advocate for issues that matter to them, however our number one priority is student safety."

Administrators coordinated with the school’s Resource Officer, staff, and the Paso Robles Police Department in preparation. A supervised space on the outdoor stage was made available for students wishing to share their perspectives, and staff directed students to remain on campus for safety.

According to the district, while California Education Code 48205(a)(12)(A) allows for one excused absence per year for middle and high school students to participate in civic or political events, advance notification from a parent or guardian is required.

The district stated that Monday’s protest activity did not meet school expectations, citing a lack of prior parental notification and instances of students disregarding staff direction. Students who left campus without pre-approval were marked with unexcused absences.

Administrators plan to follow up with those students and their families regarding potential consequences.
