OTS awards grant to Paso Robles Police for traffic safety enforcement

PASO ROBLES — The Paso Robles Police Department has received a $75,000 grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) to enhance traffic enforcement and education efforts aimed at reducing serious injuries and fatalities on local roadways. The grant will fund programs through September 2026.

Deputy Chief Caleb Davis said the funding will bolster the department’s ability to address dangerous driving behaviors through a combination of education and enforcement.

“We are grateful to receive this grant, which will strengthen our traffic enforcement efforts and improve road safety,” he said. “Through a combination of education and enforcement efforts, our goal is to reduce dangerous driving behaviors, prevent crashes, and make our roads safer for everyone."

The grant will support a range of initiatives, including DUI checkpoints and patrols, high-visibility distracted driving enforcement, and operations targeting violations that endanger bicyclists and pedestrians. Additional efforts will focus on speeding, failure to yield, red-light running, and unsafe lane changes.

Community outreach will also play a role, with presentations planned on impaired and distracted driving, speeding, and bicycle and pedestrian safety. Funding will additionally provide officer training and recertification in DUI and impairment detection, including SFST, ARIDE, and DRE programs.

OTS Director Stephanie Dougherty said the partnership aims to promote long-term safety on California roads by encouraging drivers to make responsible choices.

The program is funded through OTS and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
