30th anniversary celebration highlights international craft beer, local food, and community partnerships during sold-out festival weekend
PASO ROBLES — Thousands of beer enthusiasts, brewers, chefs, and visitors from around the world gathered in Paso Robles on Saturday, May 30, for the Firestone Walker Invitational Beer Festival, a signature event that once again transformed the Paso Robles Event Center into a showcase of craft beer and great food.
The annual festival featured 65 breweries from across the globe, offering attendees the opportunity to sample beers from breweries representing the United States, Japan, Argentina, Mexico, Belgium, the United Kingdom, Australia, and New Zealand. More than 20 local chefs and restaurants also participated.
This year's festival held special significance as part of Firestone Walker Brewing Company's yearlong celebration of its 30th anniversary.
Firestone Walker co-founder David Walker said the event continued the tradition of bringing together a passionate community of brewers and beer lovers.
"It actually went just as well as the previous 12," Walker said. "They just seem to be just fantastic events, and maybe I'm biased, but I always come away from them feeling like it was a great event and everybody was happy."
The festival has become a destination event for many attendees, with visitors returning year after year. Walker said he was reminded of that while pouring beer during the event.
"The amount of people who came up to me and said 'number seven or number 10 or fifth year in a row,' it's one of those things which people put on their calendar and keep coming back for," he said.
The weekend festivities extended beyond Saturday's main event. Firestone Walker hosted its annual Brewery Block Party on Friday evening, drawing approximately 800 attendees. Brewers began arriving in Paso Robles as early as Wednesday and Thursday, with many staying through Monday.
Walker credited much of the festival's success to its longstanding partnership with Paso Robles Pioneer Day, which receives a portion of the proceeds.
"Everybody associated with Pioneer Day, they just sort of had the vision. We put on, we go to events all the time, but to do an event of this scale, you really need 100% buy in from the community the city. And that's what Pioneer Day brought," Walker said. "They have deep, deep roots in the community and an earnest desire to give back to the community and celebrate what Paso Robles represents in terms of its agricultural past and present."
The collaboration has helped create an event that benefits both attendees and local organizations while showcasing Paso Robles on an international stage.
For Walker, one of the most rewarding aspects of the festival remains the opportunity to reconnect with brewers and friends from around the world.
"It's just a random encounter," he said. "It's an excuse to connect a lot like-minded people. That's truly the reason I love it the most."
The festival's international reach was evident throughout the day, with breweries traveling from multiple continents to participate. Walker said seeing brewers from countries around the world gather in Paso Robles continues to be a source of pride for the brewery and the community.
"There is a big pinch-me moment when you drive into the festival and all the people are lined up outside," he said. "The scale of it never ceases to make us feel proud."
While the beer remains the centerpiece, Walker emphasized that the event's food offerings have become an equally important part of the experience.
"The food culture in Paso Robles is really good," Walker said. "It makes such a big difference to the overall vibe and the overall experience. I don't think people talk about it enough."
As Firestone Walker celebrates three decades of brewing, the festival once again demonstrated its ability to bring together visitors, brewers, and residents in a celebration that extends far beyond the beer itself.
