Taste of Downtown and Arte de Tiza

From 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., over 40 restaurants and wine tasting rooms will offer scrumptious samples and tastes during the 21st Annual Taste of Downtown. The 16th annual Arte de Tiza is sponsored by the Paso Robles Art Association. The sidewalk chalk art show on Pine Street across from Studios on the Park begins at 8:00 a.m. Chalk and art supplies are provided, but sidewalk space is limited, so artists…. come early! By the time Taste of Downtown begins, the sidewalk turned artist palette will be transformed with bright color, shapes and images that might inspire the artist in you! Downtown Daydreaming

Downtown Paso Robles is a book in progress. There are so many stories yet to be written. I met a happy couple visiting the historic Carnegie Library, our shops, tasting rooms (olive oil, cheese and cookies) and figuring out where to have lunch before a movie. It was their 20th anniversary and they landed in Paso Robles by accident. One son was at camp for two weeks, daughter gone with family for the summer, the eldest son decided he wanted Mom and Dad (instead of Uncle) to drive him to Cal Poly from Mountain View to get set up. Well, Mom and Dad were all set to enjoy a week with an empty nest. They said, “Our best vacation yet. We love it here and will be back with the family!!!”
A large group was enjoying a family reunion in the Downtown City Park one afternoon. There were a few residents, but just about everyone else has lived here at one time; now living in New York, Kentucky, New Mexico, Arizona, Colorado, Hawaii, and Ohio. To each of them, Paso Robles is HOME and always will be. Home is a place where you grow up wanting to leave and grow old wanting to come back. It’s where we love, where our feet may leave, but not our hearts. That is Paso Robles, I hear it from everyone I meet downtown.
So, are you ready to write a story or book? If not, I hope you are busy reading one. Paso has a great used bookstore. I love walking into a bookstore. It’s like all my friends are sitting on shelves waving their pages at me. “Spare Time Used Books” has been in business at 945 12th Street for 30 years. Wylona and Albert have owned the store for more than 12 years. There are over 2,000 books available and Wylona knows every book in the house. Tell her what you like to read. She’ll introduce you to a selection guaranteed to please. They have a great trade and credit program which allows a huge variety of books at reasonable prices. Check it out. They’re open 6 days a week.
They have customers who vacation in Paso annually; picking up and returning stacks of books. I was in the store when a couple from Fairbanks Alaska came in. Their local bookstore had just closed. The whole family reads daily, so they were disappointed, but happy to see Wylona and Albert to re-stock reading for the year. There are even regulars who come in during the Mid-state fair to pick up books. Remember…outside of a dog, a book is man’s best friend.
The word is out. I received an enthusiastic call from a lady who heard that I could assist her. She lives in Tehachapi, wanting information on Downtown Paso Robles for her RV group that is vacationing in September. The Main Street office offers copies of our directory, pamphlets, magazines, maps, event calendars, and information. I mailed samples and will have the items of her choice ready when she arrives.
