Janet Carlile Waters passed gently in her sleep in the early hours of Sept. 12, 2019, in her home in Santa Margarita. She was a devoted mother, grandmother and community member who was loved and cherished by all who knew her.

Jan was born March 23, 1942, in Los Angeles, to Joyce and Tom Carlile. She grew up in the San Fernando Valley and attended Van Nuys High School. Jan married Tom Waters in 1964 and had four children while living in the Los Angeles area. Jan bought the ranch she always dreamed of in 1992 and relocated her family to Santa Margarita. She worked as an accountant in the oil and gas industry eventually working her way up to Chief Financial Officer before retiring. In her retirement, she earned her teacher’s credential and taught at the California Boys School in Atascadero.

Jan spent her retirement years in community service; leading the Santa Lucia 4-H sewing group, running for Atascadero school board, and being a key member in the local chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR). Jan served as regent and registrar for the DAR during her years of service. Jan spearheaded her DAR chapter’s involvement in the Penny Pines Reforestation Program. The program replants seedling trees to renew and maintain California’s 20 million acres of national forest land. Jan also was a long-time member and supporter of the women’s group The Sisterhood of Avalon. She was an avid gardener and spent hours planning and working in her garden. She was a voracious reader and was never without her kindle.

Jan is survived by her four children: Jessica Brown, Abigail Kopp, Caleb Waters and Becky Daughtery; her 10 grandchildren: Cody Brown, Molly Brown, Zachary Kopp, Hannah Brown, Jolene Kopp, Wade Daughtery, Rhiannon Waters, Logan Daughtery, Tessa Kopp and Calvin Waters; and her three siblings Tom Carlile, Juliet LaMers-Nobel, and Tom LaMers.

A memorial service is planned for 1 p.m. on Nov. 17 at Chapel of the Roses in Atascadero. Donations in her name can be made to riseslo.org or doctorswithoutborders.org.
