PASO ROBLES — Celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Saturday, Jan. 18, as the City of Paso Robles, The Paso Robles Rec Foundation and the Paso Robles Second Baptist Church host their annual MLK Day celebration. The theme for this year’s event is “The Power of One.”

The event will begin with the March for Unity. Those interested in joining the march should gather at the corner of 21st and Gregory Streets (near the Paso Robles Events Center south gate) at 11:30 a.m. for the walk to Flamson Middle School. Free refreshments will be available for march participants. In the event of heavy rain, the march will be called off.

The event proper will take place at the Flamson Middle School auditorium beginning at 1 p.m. It will include a dance performance by New Crew Dance, a speech by Paso Robles City Council Member Maria Garcia, art and essay contests, door prizes, drama and poetry, performances by the First Baptist Church and the Second Baptist Church choirs and a performance by the Paso Robles Youth Arts Foundation dance group.

Later in the day Studios on the Park will be hosting a performance of anthems from the civil rights movement by vocalist Valerie Johnson and musicians Dr. Al B. Blue and Dr. Safe Sax. The event begins at 5 p.m. at Studios on the Park, 1130 Pine Street in Paso Robles, and is free to the public.
