William “Bill” Hobbs

William “Bill” Hobbs passed away peacefully on August 24, 2017 at home in Paso Robles with his “girls” at his side. Bill was born April 10, 1929 in Santa Maria to George Stowell Hobbs Sr. and Myrtle (Launders) Hobbs. Bill was the fourth of seven children and a fourth generation Santa Maria Pioneer. He graduated from Santa Maria High in 1946 where he excelled in sports (football, basketball) and was a class president and editor of the award winning publication, Fall Breeze. Bill went on to continue his education at Santa Maria JC where he continued his love of football, basketball, and baseball. In 1949 he was named “athlete of the year.” He then went on to Cal Poly SLO on a football scholarship while majoring in architectural engineering. In addition to football, Bill also played tennis.
In July of 1952 Bill and Wilma Jean Canada made a dash for Las Vegas, Nev. They just celebrated 65 years of marriage. In Dec. 1952 Bill was inducted into the Army where he served for almost two years continuing on in the reserves and was honorably discharged as a Corporal in Mar. 1961.
Bill worked in the architectural field and moved from Santa Maria to Lompoc in 1962. In 1972 he moved the family to Porterville and then to Visalia. In 2008 Bill and Wilma moved to Paso Robles.
Bill became a licensed architect in 1970 and was active for over 65 years. He was a member of the San Joaquin Chapter of AIA from 1972 to 1993 where he participated in the Sandcastle Competition. He was also a Lions Club member for 40 years donating his time and service to the club. Bill loved his work, his family, and friends. He continued his lifelong love of anything sports by playing softball, tennis, golf, ping pong, and horseshoes. He also enjoyed coaching his girls in the Lompoc Ponytail league. Upon moving to Paso Robles he ramped up his card playing activities and made a whole new group of friends. He was known as a really sweet man calling everyone in their “senior” community on their birthdays and anniversaries.
Bill leaves behind his wife, Wilma; daughters, Vanessa (Mark) and Sandy (Jim); sister, Nancy Joan; sister-in-law, Mabel;  brother-in-law, Earl; grandchildren, Stacy, Kacee, Dustine, Dana, and Darrin; great grandchildren, Rashad, Isabella, and Amina; and many loved nieces, nephews, and friends. Bill was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Alice, Dorothy, and Norma Jean; and brothers, George Jr. and Les.
Bill never met a stranger and his sense of humor was as big as his heart. He would have wanted those left behind to celebrate his life and remember those fond memories that he shared with each of you.
A celebration of Bill’s life will be held on Sat., Sept.16, at 11 a.m. at Kuehl-Nicolay Funeral Home, 1703 Spring St., Paso Robles, CA.
