CHOLAME — Two men sustained major injuries after colliding head-on on State Route 46 on Wednesday, Aug. 28, reports California Highway Patrol.
At approximately 7:28 a.m. Joey McGraw Jr., 29, of San Bernardino, was traveling westbound in his 1999 Acura TL on State Route 46 west of Antelope Road. McGraw attempted to pass a truck tractor and trailer combination. As he tried to pass the truck and trailer, he realized he didn't have sufficient clearance to pass without colliding into a westbound vehicle.
McGraw turned back into the westbound lane, however, due to his unsafe speed, he was unable to maintain control of his vehicle and swerved out of control into the eastbound lane.
McGraw drove directly into the path of Michael G. Klassen, 67, of Pebble Beach in his 2015 Toyota Sienna. The vehicles collided head-on. The commercial truck tractor and trailer combination were not involved in the collision.
After impact, Klassen in his Toyota went over the south side of the highway and the Acura with McGraw came to rest blocking the eastbound lane of traffic.
Both drivers sustained major injuries consisting of possible fractures and were transported to Sierra Vista Regional Medical Center in San Luis Obispo.
Alcohol and or drugs were not contributing factors in this collision. This collision was also not associated with the State Route 41 and State Route 46 "Y" intersection as it happened approximately one mile east of the interchange.
