PRPD identifies man who died in hit-and-run


Jose Montesguillen was trying to stop suspected drunken driver, police believe

PASO ROBLES The name of a man who died while reportedly trying to stop a suspected drunken driver in Downtown Paso Robles was released by the Paso Robles Police Department.

At approximately 10:40 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 28, PRPD officers were dispatched to Santa Maria Brewing Co, located at 14th and Park streets, regarding a hit-and-run involving a car and pedestrian.

Officers learned that Jose Montesguillen and several friends of the suspect attempted to stop her from driving. Montesguillen, while attempting to stop the suspect, was thrown from the woman’s vehicle and struck the pavement. The victim sustained major injuries and was transported to Sierra Vista Hospital.

The suspect, identified as Sarah Hale, 21, of Paso Robles, fled the scene and was located at her residence a short time later, PRPD reported. Hale was arrested for felony driving under the influence and felony hit-and-run.

After being booked at San Luis Obispo County Jail, Hale was released after posting bail. After Hale’s release, Montesguillen, of Paso Robles, succumbed to his injuries while at Sierra Vista Hospital.
