CAMBRIA — Since 1995, members of the Thaddeus Sherman Masonic Lodge in Paso Robles, have invited one outstanding student reader per Cambria Grammar School (C.G.S.) classroom to travel to Barnes and Noble in San Luis Obispo to select a book to donate to the school’s library. On Feb. 22, 15 students, from transitional kindergarten through fifth grade, ventured into SLO to select a book to be added to the shelves of the Cambria Grammar School library. The students, accompanied by a handful of family members, C.G.S. Principal Jill Southern, and C.G.S. Library Media Clerk, Anastasia Killham, joined representatives from the Masonic Lodge and enjoyed a book store shopping spree.
The “Mason Award” recipients have the honor of being the first to check out the new library books and were recognized at a weekly Peace Leader Assembly on Friday, March 15. Members of the Thaddeus Sherman Masonic Lodge assisted in presenting the books to the selected students and to the school as a whole. In addition to the 15 new student selected books, the Masonic Group purchased a selection of additional books, chosen by Principal Southern and the school’s Media Clerk.
The school estimates that over the past 24 years, there have been approximately 400 books with a value of roughly $5,500 that have been donated by the Thaddeus Sherman Masonic Lodge to C.G.S. “Cambria Grammar School is incredibly fortunate to have the support of the Thaddeus Sherman Masonic Lodge. The experience of traveling to the city of San Luis Obispo, selecting a book, and leaving a legacy in their library is truly joyful,” said Principal Southern.
Each book features a personal inscription dedicated to the Mason Award recipient along with a short quote submitted by the student’s teacher. Bodhi Hodges, a third-grade teacher, said of her student that “Ricky reads to learn. He reads to laugh. He has discovered the power of a good book. This makes Ricky a terrific book buyer for our school library.”
Cambria Grammar School is located in Cambria, California and is a part of the Coast Unified School District.
