Optimist Club of Paso Robles receives high honors

PASO ROBLES — The Optimist Club of Paso Robles, a local chapter of Optimist International, received high honors and international recognition when the club was recognized as one of four finalists for “Optimist Club of the Year” at the 100th International Convention held in Louisville, Ky. in early July.

Paso Robles resident Chuck Sawyer, Lieutenant Governor-Elect of the Pacific Southwest District, was among the 1,300 Optimists attending the International Convention and was present at the closing business session on July 3 when the finalists were announced. Sawyer, Immediate Past President of the Club for the 2018-2019 Optimist year, submitted the multi-page application at the end of his term and by the Dec. 31 deadline. Sawyer never heard another word until the finalists were announced at the convention by Past International President, H. Nick Prillaman. Sawyer was asked to accompany one other finalist in attendance, the announced winner from Kalamazoo, Mich., to come up on stage and receive the award from President Prillaman.

When asked if Sawyer was disappointed that the Paso Robles Optimist Club did not win the competition, Sawyer said, “Not at all! I was extremely happy and thrilled that our club was recognized by Optimist international for all the work we accomplish in our community and the youth we serve here. Our Optimist Club is a wonderful service club to belong to and seeing our community name of Paso Robles show up on the screen at the convention was not only a big surprise but a BIG feather in our cap as well. I was very proud of the efforts our membership accomplished during my term as Club President. To receive this honor and to be recognized for those efforts by Optimist International was a very special moment for both our club and our community.”

The “Optimist Club of the Year” is an annual program of Optimist International that recognizes Optimist clubs for all the work they do to serve youth in the community and is given to the most outstanding club in the organization. When you consider the large number of applications from all over the country and internationally that are submitted each year for the competition, it is quite an honor to be selected as a finalist in the competition.

The Optimist Club of Paso Robles sponsors many youth events in the North County such as The Optimist Kid’s Fishing Derby held 2-3 times per year at Santa Margarita Lake, the Honey Oak Festival Spelling Bee, and Arte De Tiza. Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, Paso Robles High School FFA, high school scholarships, and sports teams also benefit from the club’s main fundraiser, the Annual Chinese Auction. Sawyer added, “The Optimist Club of Paso Robles embraces the Optimist mission of providing hope and positive vision to the youth of our community, the community itself, and to ourselves. We enjoy being a part of this community and serving the needs of our youth. We are always in need of new members and welcome anyone who has a passion for helping our youth.” Anyone who wishes to join the club, or is interested in finding out more information can call Linda Stermer 805-238-2410 or Chuck Sawyer 805-591-9590.
