New Jersey man dies in three-vehicle accident on Highway 46 West


An accident on Highway 46 West took the life of a New Jersey man at approximately 9:17 p.m. Tuesday night and also injured a Cayucos woman and a man from Washington state, according to a press release issued by the California Highway Patrol.

The CHP has not yet released the names of those involved in the accident.

An unidentified driver from Manalapan, New Jersey was driving a 2002 Honda Civic eastbound on Highway 46 West just after 9 p.m. Tuesday when he lost control for unknown reasons, crossing over the center line, broadsiding a 2015 Honda Civic driven by an unidentified 66-year-old Cayucos woman and then striking the front of another westbound vehicle, a 2008 Toyota Prius driven by an unidentified 35-year-old man from Pasco, Wash. During the collision with the Prius, the driver of the 2002 Civic was ejected and sustained fatal injuries as the result of blunt force trauma.

The Cayucos woman who was driving the 2015 Civic sustained major injuries including a broken leg, a broken ankle, a broken knee and a broken rib. The driver of the Prius had minor injuries and complained of pain.

The cause of the collision is still under investigation, but the CHP noted that drugs and alcohol are not suspected to have been a factor.
