THE NORTH COUNTY — “Life Began with waking up and loving my mother’s face,” Writer George Eliot once said. For those who will be seeing their mom’s face on Mother’s Day, May 13, North County wineries, restaurants, hotels and even a movie theater will be hosting events to honor the mothers of our community. All events will take place Sunday, May 13.

Portola Inn | 6650 Portola Rd, Atascadero, California

The 10th annual Mother’s Day Picnic, co-hosted by SLO County Supervisor Debbie Arnold, SLO County Supervisor John Peschong, Atascadero Mayor Tom O'Malley and Paso Robles Mayor Steve Martin, will take place in the shade of the historical Portola Inn.
“We wanted moms to have a nice, low-key, not-real-fancy experience, at a nice site under the shade,” said Atascadero Mayor Tom O’Malley, who owns the Portola Inn property. He said he enjoys the picnic because it reminds him of his own family tradition.
O’Malley said after some unsuccessful Mother’s Day brunches with his then young children, he and his wife decided a picnic would be so much more relaxing on a day to honor motherhood.
“We would go to the Santa Margarita Mercantile, grab sandwiches, have a picnic and the kids were much happier,” he said.
The inn will be offering kid-friendly, “kickback” activities on its scenic grounds, including lawn games, music and an ice cream parlor. The inn’s blacksmith shop, originally set up by Atascadero’s founder E.G. Lewis, will also be open for demonstrations.
The upscale picnic for moms will feature champagne (donated by Atascadero Grocery Outlet), sparkling cider, iced tea and soda. Chef Charlie Catering’s buffet menu will include fresh fruit and yogurt, an heirloom tomato salad, Korean fried rice, vegetable stir fried rice, roasted bacon wrapped tenderloins, sweet potatoes and grilled broccolini, as well as apple rose pastries, chocolate truffles, cookies and Cold Stone ice cream for dessert.
All proceeds will go to RISE, a nonprofit organization that serves both victims of intimate partner violence and sexual assault/abuse and their loved ones. The brunch has been donated proceeds to RISE the past few years, but began donating the proceeds years ago to different organizations when the brunch began to gain popularity.
This year’s sponsors are Heather Moreno, Portola Inn, SLO County Board of Supervisors, Southern California Gas Company, Paso Robles Waste & Recycle, Waste Management Atascadero and Allos\Chicago Grade Landfill & Recycling. All members of RISE and families at the El Camino Homeless Organization shelter and Transitions Mental Health shelter are welcome to attend the event for free.
