COUNTY — Memorial Day 2019 is being celebrated across the Central Coast and the nation on Monday, May 27.
A federal holiday since 1971, the day’s origins are post-Civil War in the struggle to adequately comprehend the number of men lost. Often sharing ceremonies, locations and salutes to the flag with Veterans Day, military leaders who’ve lost men in combat will thank the public not to confuse the days, the first honoring the sacrifice made by the fallen and the latter more broadly for those who’ve served in the country’s armed forces.
With that in mind, Atascadero’s Faces of Freedom Memorial in Atascadero Park, 9029 Morro Rd., will be the site of a Veterans Memorial and Community BBQ on May 27 from noon to 3 p.m. Event food includes a tri-tip sandwich, salad, chips and drinks or half sandwich or hot dog with salad, chips and a drink.
The event follows an 11 a.m. ceremony at Pine Mountain Cemetery, at 1 Cemetery Rd., in Atascadero, hosted by the Atascadero Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2814.
The event shares a planned flyover by the Estrella Warbirds restored World War II-era military planes, expected to reach Atascadero first then up to Templeton and the Paso Robles District Cemetery moments later.
At 45 Nacimiento Lake Dr., in Paso Robles organizers at the Paso Robles Cemetery will have their customary Avenue of Flags erected with a representative of the American Legion as Master of Ceremonies.
New this year, the 40th Infantry Division Band from the California Army National Guard will play for 30 minutes starting at 10:30 a.m. The band will also be performing a free concert from 5 to 7 p.m. on Sunday, May 26 in the Downtown City Park, organized by the Downtown Paso Robles Main Street Association.
For those seeking more extended time to congregate outdoors with less solemn overtones, Art in the Park is being held May 25 to May 27 in Morro Bay’s Triangle Park between Morro Bay Boulevard and Harbor Street, featuring “a mixture of works in a variety of mediums,” the event generally runs from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on the three days.
A three day Best of the West Antique Equipment Show is being held on Santa Margarita Ranch, 9000 Yerba Buena Ave., in the run-up to Memorial Day, May 24 to May 26. The Friday to Sunday event features parades starting with a salute at noon each day but primarily focuses on displays of antique equipment, including tractors, engines, cars, steam trains and airplanes.
