McMillan Fire in Shandon grows to over 2,000 acres

Highway 46 East open in both directions, fire 50% contained

SHANDON — Highway 46 East outside of Shandon is open and the McMillan Fire was at 50 percent containment, according to Cal Fire San Luis Obispo County.

The fire broke out at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, June 12, east of McMillan Canyon Road and quickly grew to more than 2,000 acres according to Cal Fire SLO. Highway 46 East in both directions were closed while firefighters in the air and on the ground worked to stop forward progress.

By 6 p.m., Highway 46 East was open in both directions but traffic was being diverted through Shandon.

Firefighters were able to save structures at the old Copeland ranch.
