Lewis Eugene (Gene) Hart flew his last race Aug. 14, 2018. There to meet him was Mom, Dorothy Hart, with a big smile and Gunner wagging his thumb like crazy. He is now safe and happy in the Lord’s Loft. “Gene” as he was known to all, started flying pigeons at age 12. He was an accomplished breeder and racer and won many awards and trophies. He was the President of the California Racing Pigeon Association for two years, Co-Founder of the Atascadero Racing Pigeon Club and was fourth in the Nation in 1969. Pigeons were his passion.
Gene was born Jan. 26, 1928 in Redfield, Kan. to Lyle and Sybl (Irene) Hart. As a young man, he lived in Kansas, then moved to Idaho. He started school in Idaho, then they moved to Bellflower, Calif., where he graduated from Excelsior Union High School, Norwalk, Calif. in 1947.
In 1952 he moved to Atascadero, Calif., Gene met his wife of 50 years, Dorothy Murray Moothart through a mutual friend, Dean Green and they married April 2, 1966. They lived in Atascadero their entire married life and had many friends that loved and admired them. They often opened their home to their kids’ friends that needed a place to stay and the love of a family.
Gene was an accomplished carpenter. He worked for the California State of Corrections where he retired after 31 years.
Gene celebrated his 90th birthday this year with family coming from several western states. It was a fun time had by all looking at pictures and sharing stories.
He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Dorothy Dean Hart, daughter, Laurie Quick, grandson, Kevin Amos and his parents, Lyle and Irene Hart and his awesome dog Gunner.
Gene is survived by his sisters, Jerrie Heinemann of Atascadero, Calif., Rosalie (Doug) Payne of Atascadero, Calif. and Janice Hart of Yarnell, Ariz., sons, Curtis (Debbie) Hart of Eagle Point, Ore., Kerry (Jean) Hart of Spring Creek, Nev., daughters, Lynne Moothart Amos (Steve Brown) of Atascadero, Calif. and Pamela Hart Rey of Discovery Bay, Calif., 12 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews and friends.
His family and friends will miss him dearly and he will always be in our hearts, thoughts, and prayers. Gene (Papa), Dorothy (Nana) and Gunner are together again and for eternity.
