PASO ROBLES — The Paso Robles girls water polo team began their Central Section competition this past weekend with a tournament at Tulare Union High School. The Bearcats played two games on Friday and two games on Saturday and won them all without ever trailing in the tournament.
In their first game, the girls played Fresno-Sunnyside High School and continued their recent dominance, winning 14-1. Eight different Bearcats scored in the game with Tatiana Smeltzer leading the way with four.
The Lady Bearcats kept it going in the second game when they played Tulare-Mission Oak and cruised to a 13-4 win, goalie Finley Burns recorded eight saves and Halle Nash added four goals
Paso Robles opened the second day of tournament play with a semifinal matchup with Kingsburg. The Bearcats put together another strong offensive and distributed the scoring across the entire team. Mackenzie Raymond and Nash each had three goals, Smeltzer added two and Aubrey Pasky and Tori Pugh each scored a single goal for the 10-2 victory.
The Bearcats played their closest game in the championship against Exeter when they won by only seven, 12-5. Smeltzer led the way once more pouring in five goals, Nash finished with four and Raymond with two.
Throughout the tournament, the Bearcats outscored their opponents 49-12. Smeltzer, coming off of an eight-goal performance against Atascadero, continued her scoring onslaught by scoring 17 goals and earning tournament MVP honors. Smeltzer was joined on the All-Tournament team by two of her teammates, Nash and Pasky. Nash scored 11 goals total and Pasky was named as the tournament’s utility player for excellent center defense and steals. Raymond added eight goals and Burns finished the weekend with 32 saves.
The Bearcats are 6-0 overall, 1-0 in the Mountain League, and head to Nipomo to play the Titans tonight at 5 p.m.
