John Robert Ervine, 68, of Paso Robles, passed away peacefully on March 9, 2018. A Celebration of Life will be held on May 5, at 11 a.m. at the Wranglerette arena located at 7785 Aragon Rd Atascadero, CA.
John was born in Meshoppen, Pennsylvania on Jan. 2, 1950, to Wayne and Irene Ervine. The Ervine family moved to Waterford, in 1951, before settling in the Atascadero area in 1956. John joined the Marine Corps in 1968, while still in high school, but waiting to enter active service after graduation from Atascadero High School. John reported for service in July 1968 at Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego. Upon graduation from boot camp John was assigned a Military Occupational Specialty of 0844, Field Artillery Fire Control Man undergoing additional training before assignment to serve in Vietnam. Upon arrival in Vietnam in January 1969, John was assigned to 2nd Battalion, 11th Marines in An Hoa, a Marine Combat base located 17 miles south and west of Da Nang. He was thereafter assigned to Headquarters Battery, Survey Section. During his service in Vietnam he was awarded the standard medals for Vietnam service and addition thereto he was awarded the Combat Action Ribbon. The Combat Action Ribbon is awarded Marines who physically engaged the enemy, under hostile fire, or was physical attack. After serving for a year in Vietnam, John returned home to Atascadero in January 1970 and started dating Thelma Douglass. They were married on Feb. 4, 1972. John and Thelma had their first son, Shane who was born on June 18, 1973 and their second son, Roger was born on Dec. 11, 1974. John worked for Texaco oil co, in San Ardo for over 20 years and enjoyed fixing up older homes. He was always ready to help a friend with home repairs or any project.
He enjoyed spending time in his garden and he grew the best tomatoes and loved to share anything he grew with friends and neighbors. He was rarely seen without his beloved dogs Claymore, Ruby and granddog Ariel who went just about everywhere with him. John was a great husband, dad, grandpa and friend. He will be dearly missed by all who knew him. John was preceded in death by his mother Irene and father Wayne. He is survived by his loving wife Thelma, sons Shane and Roger, granddaughters Emily and Rachel, siblings Mary Johnson, Olin Ervine, Jay and Kate Ervine, Frank and Shirley Ervine, and Virginia and Louis Greuling, and a large extended family and close friends Rick and Shelly Elisarraras, Jay and Carolin Peterson, and Terry and Lydia Smith and many others whose lives he touched.
