Gilbert Hector Dekocker

Gilbert Hector Dekocker, a former meat business owner and butcher, passed away peacefully at his home on July 9, 2018, at the age of 84.

He is survived by his wife, Jocelyn Dekocker; his daughters, Philly Dekocker and Susie Johansen; and his niece, Linda Cools.

Gilbert was born in Dienze, Belgium on Jan. 26, 1934. The second World War brought hardships to him, his siblings, and his parents. A couple members of his family were forced to labor and concentration camps. After being in the Belgian army in 1953, a few years later he decided he wanted to see the world. Eventually, he found his way to the Central Coast and has been a longtime resident of Atascadero.

Gilbert lived his life and he lived it well despite his early life adversities. He was a member of the Moose and Elks clubs for many years. He enjoyed playing cribbage with the Cribbage Club every other Sunday in Santa Margarita. Sometimes in the evenings he liked playing poker at Outlaws. When he was not busy butchering throughout the county or running his business, he enjoyed fishing trips to Mexico with his friends.

Lastly, he loved spending time with his family. He especially loved dancing in the living room with his wife and daughter. Although known to have a strong-willed and robust exterior, he had compassionate heart. He has impacted many lives, those who truly knew him can attest to that.

A funeral service is scheduled for 11 a.m. on July 20 at the St. Williams Church in Atascadero followed by a reception at the dining hall next to the church.
