Rapper Cardi B left her fans wanting more during Saturday night, July 20, performance at the California Mid-State Fair.
Cardi, 26, got the “Cardi Party” started shortly after 8:30 p.m. in the Chumash Grandstand Arena. The sold-out crowd had already been worked to a frenzy by her dee-jay and they did not subside until she left the stage roughly 45 minutes later.
Despite, what some considered a quick performance, many of her fans were happy with the energetic and quick-paced concert. After all, it’s not every day one of the hottest rappers in the world plays the Mid-State Fair.
Cardi’s show was one of only two to sell out prior to the 2019 Fair’s opening on July 17. All 14,875 tickets were gobbled up in less than three hours. Not a record for the Fair, but in the top five.
Raised in The Bronx of New York City, Cardi gained attention in 2013 as a self-acclaimed “Internet celebrity” when several of her music videos went viral on Instagram. In 2015, she made her official musical debut joining Jamaican artists Shaggy and Popcaan in a remix video of Shaggy’s hit “Boom Boom.” Shortly after, Cardi was nominated for both Best New Artist and Best Female Hip-Hop Artist during the 2017 BET Awards.
After a quick request to have her mic turned up after her opening, Cardi whipped the crowd into a frenzy with each song, barely giving attendees to catch their breath, and quickly moved from hit to hit including “Bartier Cardi” and “I Like It.” She also made sure to toss in some verses from songs she’d been featured in, including “No Limit” by G-Easy.
Fashion is something that Cardi takes pride in and her sparkly denim bodysuit with detachable pants and white heels were the perfect country-rap ensemble for the Mid-State Fair. At one point early in the concert, she dropped the pants and strutted across the stage, to the delight of the crowd.
Cardi closed the door on her high-paced, frenetic with arguably her best-known hit, “Bodak Yellow.”
Cardi is recognized as the best-selling female rapper on the radio today and is the first female rapper to secure two No. 1s on Billboard’s Hot 100 Chart from a debut album with “I Like It” and “Bodak Yellow,” and is the first artist to accomplish this feat since 2013.
“Bodak Yellow” racked up six major music industry awards in 2018, including Single of the Year at the BET Hip Hop Awards and Favorite Song Rap/Hip Hop at the American Music Awards. Her debut studio album, “Invasion of Privacy,” is currently nominated for two GRAMMYs in 2019: Album of the Year and Best Rap Album.
