This Friday the Bearcats varsity boys and girls cross country team traveled to Visalia to compete in the Golden West Invitational at Mooney Grove Park. For the second consecutive weekend, the Bearcats competed in a race that was composed of primarily Central Section teams, this weekend being the only team not in the section. The Bearcats will be moving into the Central Section next year and have been competing against Central Section opponents to prepare for the move, and have absolutely dominated.
The race of the day took place in the boys Varsity between the Bearcats and the number one ranked team in the Central Section, Monache. The race started off with Monache taking a commanding lead as their top runner outpaced the entire pack. At the first mile mark their top five racers were all well ahead of the Bearcats. By mile two, Pablo Cortes had broken into the top three while Ian Young and Damien Gavilan were making up ground of their own. The Bearcat boys kept running and kept gaining and once they crossed the finish line after the third and final mile they had successfully placed enough runners ahead of the Marauders to walk away with a thrilling victory. The final score of the race was 71-64 according Paso Robles High School Athletic Director Anthony Morales. Michael Hernandez finished twenty-fifth overall with a time of 16:26, Steven Scruggs finished thirteenth with a time of 16:07, Young barely missed the top ten coming in eleventh place with a time of 16:01, Gavilan finished ninth with a time of 15:56 and Cortes finished first out of the Bearcats and seventh overall crossing the line with a time of 15:49. Even though the Bearcats defeated the number one team in the Central Section this Friday they still aren’t even ranked in the deep and talented Southern Section, which is why the Bearcats are chomping at the bit to move sections.
The girls varsity finished seventh at the Golden West Invitational and were led by a trio of Grace Chamberlain, Maddi Loff and Jasmine Rangel. The three ran together in a pack for much of race, pushing each other as they went. Chamberlain finished twenty-second overall with a time of 20:19 followed by Loff who finished twenty-fifth overall with a time of 20:24. Rangel came in third for the Lady Bearcats and thirty-third overall with a time of 20:49.
The Junior Varsity girls finished fourth overall while the boys JV took fifth. The girls were led by Jeneca Putman who took twenty-second place with a time of 22:49 while the boys followed Kevin Kerr who finished third overall with a time of 17:37.
The Bearcats next race will be this Saturday when they travel to the Clovis for the ASICS Clovis Invitational.
