County seeks public comment on inclusionary housing fees

COUNTY — San Luis Obispo County Department of Planning and Building is seeking public comment on amendments to the Inclusionary Housing Ordinance and Affordable Housing Fund.
Under direction from the SLO County Board of Supervisors, the Department of Planning and Building has been working on a 3-year pilot program that would raise between $2 to $4 million per year in local funding for affordable housing. These funds will be awarded to non-profit developers to build affordable housing in the County.
As part of the pilot program, the Board authorized the Department of Planning and Building to modify the Inclusionary Housing Ordinance and Affordable Housing Fund. The Inclusionary Housing Ordinance requires new housing developments to either include a percentage of affordable units or pay “in-lieu” fees into the County’s Affordable Housing Fund.
The proposed amendments would create an exemption for homes under 2,200 square feet in size while applying higher fees to larger homes using a tiered rate structure. This would include all new homes. Currently, the requirements only apply to residential developments with two or more homes.
For more information, including details of the proposed ordinance changes and frequently asked questions, refer to the Inclusionary Housing Ordinance and Affordable Housing Fund Update Summary located at www.slocounty.ca.gov.
The proposed ordinance revisions are available as a downloadable PDF on www.slocounty.ca.gov. The revisions include strikeouts (deleted text) and underlines (added text).
All public comments are welcome on the proposed amendments during the scheduled Planning Commission hearing on Jan. 24. The hearing will be held at 9 a.m. at the San Luis Obispo County Board of Supervisors Chambers, 1055 Monterey St., Room D170, County Government Center, San Luis Obispo.
