With rain in the air over the last two weeks, the phones are about to start ringing at the offices of roofers and contractors handling an oft-overlooked housing necessity, gutters.

All that tin, aluminum or copper ductwork along the balconies and eves gets overlooked the rest of the year unless one’s got to clean them out. But without some water management, the season is a muddy mess at best and a long-term erosion issue at, hopefully, worst.

Since 1986, Five Star Rain Gutters, Inc., has been serving Atascadero and the Central Coast from San Simeon to Santa Barbara, and it has crews ready for seasonal repairs and new installations, says office manager Melissa Haydon, but it’s best for them to get to know a property in more sedate weather.

Haydon jokes that she may be the only member of the extended Kennedy family not to have hung gutters herself — there’s a lot to keep up with at home base — but she has a good idea of the work involved and the need to get to know the custom needs of clients.

Priding themselves on, “seamless rain gutters at quality prices,” with a client list covering homes, hotels and wineries, the advantage in hiring professionals is first apparent in bringing out all the ladders and kit themselves so a property owner doesn’t have to worry. And notes Haydon it’s not just elbow grease, there’s a lot of math in calculating just what’s going to work on a given location.

“Even a ‘cookie cutter’ house is a custom job for us,” she explains. “It’s a ton of math because even an eighth of an inch can make a huge difference.”

After the taking the measurements it’s easier to offer maintenance and repair, often working hand in hand with a stable of contractors they’ve known for over 30 years.

Cindy and David Kennedy founded Five Star Rain Gutters in 1986 in an entrepreneurial gamble that saw Cindy working in the role Haydon now fills as well as two jobs to gather the capital for their first truck — much of the fitting and shaping happens out of the mobile workshops — and David taking up the trade permanently as his second career after learning on the job with a local firm.

If there’s an eerie hint of familiarity on meeting him, Haydon adds, it might be because her Dad previously enjoyed some success as a bit part player in film and television in the early 1980’s, but that’s aside. Three decades after trading Hollywood for the family firm, they’re still growing and taking on larger projects with a small fleet of vans and trucks and several experienced fitters who’ve spent their own careers honing their skill at Five Star.

“We’ll train anybody but you have to be able to deal with any fear of heights,” she notes, adding that workers range from 20 to David Kennedy himself at 63, “we’re too busy for him to retire.”

With trucks dispatched on any given day for free estimates through Santa Barbara County, San Luis Obispo County, and Monterey County a key selling point in having them come back for the full job is that their installers are licensed, insured and bonded for property owner protection and peace of mind.

And that’s not to mention the variety and cost scalability of options.

“Our goal is 100 percent satisfaction,” Haydon said. “We’ll often end up doing all of the properties for a client with several rentals or a new development but that covers a huge range and on-site customization.”

Some of the most prized accent work that can be done to add style to a relatively inexpensive home would be the intricate copper spouts the company specializes in but the machines on their trucks handle seven styles and 80 colors on offer from the manufacturer to get just the right match.
