Bearcats women's basketball humbled following hot start

SAN LUIS OBISPO — The Lady Bearcats basketball team came into last weekend’s San Luis Obispo Holiday Classic Tournament riding a wave of confidence after going undefeated in their opening tournament in Atascadero.

Paso entered the tournament with a 3-0 record and played Arvin High School in their first-round matchup. The Bearcats rolled in their first game, more than doubling the score of Arvin winning 60-28.

In the second round, the Bearcats faced Clovis East in SLO High School’s old gymnasium that has been refurbished. The Bearcats defense led to their offense and fast-paced scheme seemed to catch Clovis East off guard. Paso jumped out to an early 8-0 lead in the first quarter by playing suffocating defense and transition offense.

Ultimately one bad quarter was the difference for Paso. After scoring 17 points in the first quarter the Bearcats were only able to muster five in the second. They still led 22-19 going into the half but ended up losing by only three points.

Clovis East had a few taller girls on their team and utilized their size down the stretch and stopped panicking when Paso would apply pressure. Once the Bearcats stopped scoring on fast breaks and had to play against a defense that was already set up, scoring became much more difficult. The Bearcats lost the game 54-51.

On Saturday the Bearcats played two games. One tightly-contested matchup against Nipomo and a final game against Independence. Paso again led at halftime in the game against Nipomo but ended up falling to the Titans 43-39.

In their fourth and final game of the Holiday Classic Tournament, the Bearcats faced Independence and their high powered offense. In their opening game against Atascadero, they scored 79 points and one of their seniors outscored the entire Greyhound team by herself with 39 points. The Bearcats defense was able to hold her to only 17 points, but could not score on their own. For the first time, all season the Bearcats went scoreless for an entire quarter.
