Ava N. Elliott

On Jan. 21, 2018, Ava Nell Elliott, aged 93 years, four months and three days, fell asleep and woke up in the arms of her Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ. Ava was born fair of face on Monday, the 18th of August 1924, the fourth child of Charles and Lillie Dale (Burns) Hutchinson. In early 1928, Ava proudly held her new baby sister, Mary Catherine, as the family made their way by train from Kansas to Paso Robles. She spent the rest of her childhood in the almond orchards and one room school houses of Peachy Canyon and Adelaida. In June of 1942, she graduated from Templeton High School, and in the fall left for nurses training at the College of Emporia in Emporia, Kansas. It was there she met one of her dearest lifelong friends (and future sister-in-law) Ellen June Cochran. In 1946, Ava graduated with a bachelor’s degree in nursing. Her career lasted well into her 70’s, taking her to hospitals all over the United States and as far away as the King’s Hospital in Saudi Arabia.
Ava married Marvin Lee Elliott Jr. on Christmas Eve, 1948. They made their home in West Covina,  where their two sons were born. In 1970, Ava and her sons moved to Morro Bay.
Her greatest joy in life was sharing the Good News of the Gospel of Jesus Christ with hundreds of children. In 1969 she founded “Camp Solid Rock,” a summer camp held in various locations within San Luis Obispo County and at a permanent facility at Lake Shasta. The focus was the teaching of the Gospel as well as wilderness skills, particularly swimming and canoeing.
Ava Elliott’s life testified to the power of Jesus’ blood and His unchanging grace. She lived fearlessly, which led to many brushes with death, but Christ was her Solid Rock when all else was sinking sand; there His hand led her and His right hand held her. Today she stands clothed in His righteousness alone, faultless to stand before the Throne.
Ava was predeceased by her parents; brothers, Joe, Will and Lewis Hutchinson; sisters: Byrna Lou Nation, Mary Payne, Charlene Starker and Karen Elisarraras; her dear friend and sister-in-law, Ellen June Hutchinson and dear friend, Peggy Hershberger. She is survived by her beloved sons, Marvin L. Elliott III (Karen Sykes) and Charles N. Elliott; her favorite little brother, Kenneth Dale Hutchinson and wife Sherry of Morro Bay; her precious grandchildren: Quinn Neelands, Ashly McGregor, Lee Elliott, Christian Cummins and Chaz Elliott; and many cherished great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her beloved “adopted” son, Ed Rustad (Janis) and their children, Hayley and Spencer; and beloved “adopted” daughter, Annathen Hamilton Adam (Bill) and their children, Karen, Kyle and Paul. Additionally, Ava was the very proud “Auntie” of 22 nieces and nephews.
In honor of her love of nursing and commitment to the advancement of medicine, Ava directed that her body be donated to the UCLA School of Medicine. A memorial will be held soon, date to be determined, when all of Ava’s family and friends are able to gather together to honor and celebrate her amazing life.
