PASO ROBLES — The entire Downtown City Park was glowing in green and red this past Friday night as several hundred locals and visitors alike welcomed in the Christmas season at the 31st Annual Downtown Holiday Lighting Ceremony.
“I love the Christmas Spirit, this gets it all going” said one of Santa’s elves at the event, her arms and hands overloaded with caroling books, candles and the red and green cups to protect the flames.
To a countdown, and right on the hour at 6 p.m., Mrs. Claus flipped the switch and the entire Downtown City Park was lit up with twinkly lights, hand-held candles, and the glowing faces of excited children.
With the help of a dozen or so elves, the Snow Queen and King, Paso Robles Mayor Steve Martin and several City Council members, the crowd sang Christmas carols and cheered on The Grinch to come around to the idea of enjoying Christmas. There was hot cocoa and cookies as well, all of which was made possible by the Paso Robles Downtown Mainstreet Association (PRDMA), the Adelaide Inn, the Cancer Support Center and Rabobank.
According to Norma Moye, president of the PRDMA, this is all part of an overarching story.
“Mrs. Claus and the elves came all the way down from the North Pole to check it all out for Santa,” Moye said. “She wanted to make sure it was okay for him to come down too and saw that everyone was singing and what a happy town Paso Robles is.”
Since all was approved by Mrs. Claus, Santa will be coming down for the Main Street Christmas Light Parade this Saturday night, Dec. 2 at 7 p.m., and then will come back the next day and hang out in the playhouse in the City Park to visit with the kids. Santa’s schedule will be posted in the playhouse so everyone will be sure to get a chance to see him, said Moye.
The theme of the parade this year is “There’s No Place Like Home” and will showcase more than 62 entries. And don’t forget to mark your calendar for next Saturday, Dec. 9, where the Paso Robles Christmas saga with the Grinch, Scrooge, the Snow Queen and King, Mrs. Claus and Santa with all his elves will continue to unfold at the Victorian Showcase on Vine Street.
