SAN LUIS OBISPO — A 62-year-old inmate died in the San Luis Obispo County Jail Monday, according to a press release issued by the San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Department.
At approximately 3:05 p.m. Monday a correctional officer making cell inspections spoke with the 62-year-old inmate who said he was feeling ill. The deputy called for help from nearby medical staff who spoke with the inmate and found him to be alert and conscious.
As the inmate was being taken to the medical unit in a wheelchair he was conversing with medical staff, but suddenly lost consciousness. According to the Sheriff’s Office, medical and correctional staff immediately began lifesaving measures including CPR and the use of a defibrillator. Eventually, paramedics and personnel from Cal Fire took over life-saving measures but were unable to revive the patient.
The Sheriff’s Office has initiated an investigation into the incident, but no foul play is suspected. Identification of the deceased inmate is pending notification of next of kin.
