19-year-old San Miguel man killed in single-vehicle accident

SAN MIGUEL — A single-vehicle accident east of San Miguel Friday evening left one young man dead and another with minor injuries.

According to a press release issued by the California Highway Patrol Monday, 19-year-old Sean Schultz, of San Miguel, was driving a 2002 BMW 330i northbound on Ranchita Canyon Road, north of Nickel Creek Road at a high rate of speed when he lost control of the vehicle and veered into the oncoming lane. The vehicle left the roadway, crashed through a fence and plunged 30 feet into a dry riverbed.

Schultz was not wearing a safety belt at the time of the accident and was ejected from the vehicle, causing fatal injuries. Passenger Austin Althof, 18, also of San Miguel, received minor injuries and was taken to Sierra Vista Regional Medical Center in San Luis Obispo as a precaution.

The accident is still in under investigation, but police suspect that alcohol played a factor.
