Robert Kenneth Johansen

Posted: Friday, Mar 10th, 2017

Robert Kenneth Johansen was born in April 1933 in San Francisco, Calif., and passed peacefully at his home in Atascadero, Calif., on Feb. 19, 2017. Bob was surrounded by his family and his loyal dog Buddy.

At a young age his parents and older brother Ernst moved to Pasadena, where Bob grew up. At 19, he was set up on a blind date with his future wife Elizabeth Anne McKenzie. They married in 1952 and soon started their family. Bob took any and all jobs to support his four children and dedicated wife. Bob and Anne started Mission World Travel in 1972 and began helping fulfill their customers' travel dreams.

Their own travels took them around the world and ultimately to Atascadero, where they built their dream home in 1987. Johansen’s Travel Service continued to serve the community for 20 years.

In this community is where Bob truly invested his time, generosity and love of travel and friendship. He was a charter member in the Atascadero Elks Lodge, served on the board of trustees and was voted Elk of the Year in 1989. The Elks camper club, the “Roadrunners,” benefitted from Bob and Anne’s energy and expertise at planning unique trips and Bob’s guidance as WagonMaster.

Lifelong friends and cherished memories kept the Elks organization dear to Bob’s heart. Dedication to the Elks, the Atascadero Rotary Club and to all of his grandchildren’s many activities showed Bob’s true colors and commitment to family values. Bob will be remembered as a teacher of respect, coach, the “Original DIY Guy” and dedicated friend.

Bob is survived by his children Rick Johansen, Bob (Cindy) Johansen, Jamie Carnighan, Ron (Felisa) Johansen; 11 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. He is being welcomed into heaven by his beloved wife Anne, grandson Ricky Johansen and mother and father Bertha and Arne Johansen.

The immediate family will gather together to honor and celebrate his life and of course, in Johansen fashion, enjoy a meal, share stories, hugs and if you know them well, a tear or two.

Please consider making a donation in Bob’s honor to Atascadero Greyhound Foundation Lighthouse Project, lighthouseatascadero.org, P.O. Box 3120, Atascadero, CA 93423.
